This gorgeous little pizza box computer is the IBM Personal System/2 Model 30. It features and Intel 8086 MHz processor clocked at 8 MHz and is paired with 640K of RAM installed in a set of very unique IBM 30 pin SIMMs.
The IBM PS/2 Model 30 and Model 25 were the only computers ever produced that used the theMCGAorMulti-Color Graphics Array standard.MCGA is similar to VGA in that it had a 256-color mode (the 256-color mode in VGA was sometimes referred to as MCGA) and uses 15-pin analog connectors. The PS/2 chipset\'s limited abilities prevents full EGA compatibility and high-resolution multi-color VGA display modes.
Prince of Persia, Loom and Planet X3 worked in VGA mode, but Continuum in EGA mode did not.
This computer will work with a standard VGA monitor, but the number 9 pin on the PS/2 is blocked, so you\'ll need to pull the 9th pin from your VGA connector. The 9th pin is just a ground pin.
The 720K floppy disk drive is working and I\'m including three freshly baked 720K disks with the system:
- PS/2 Model 30 Starter Disk
- PS/2 Model 20 Advanced Diagnostics disk
- DOS 5.0 Boot disk with FDISK, FORMAT and Paku-Paku, a modern Pacman clone for 8088 to give you something to do in between BASIC sessions.
If no disk is inserted, the computer will boot to IBM Basic.
There is a 20 MB ESDI hard drive in the computer, while it does spin-up and seek, the computer reports a 1701 error and the disk is unusable.
The ISA riser is present in the system and I have confirmed that this computer will work with an XT-IDE device when the ESDI hard drive is disconnected. An XTIDE is not included.
Unlike many XT class computers that have come through our shop, this PS/2 Model 30 is not picky about keyboards. Therefore a keyboard is included with this computer to get you started.
So come on, dip your toes in the very earliest history of IBM PCs, without getting weighed down by the need to acquire a specialized CRT, keyboard or mouse.
Monitor is not included.
