Current slide {CURRENT_SLIDE} of {TOTAL_SLIDES}- Save on Digital Cameras
I have used many Nikon digital cameras, but this model is my favorite. For the money, to me it is the best Nikon DSLR value on the used camera market. I have also owned two D700s, one d800 and one D800E, all full frame models and all fine cameras but this one will do the same thing at much less money. PLus, DX lenses are less expensive, than FX. So there is a savings there. I have not used the new D500 so I cannot compare the two. BUt what I do like in the D300s is its 12.3 mp, just right! THe 36.3 mp in the 800 and 800e are too much! It takes too long to attach pictures to an email or even to download into my computer. I found myself setting the mp on "small" or about 12mp, so in reality I was defeating my purpose of getting such a high mp camera. I never enlarged anything over 8 X 10, and at that size the pictures were virtually identical. So I decided I had too much money in a camera and lens (about $4000.00) and went back to the 30Os with three lenses, a Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4, a Nikon 16-85 and a Nikon 18-300, all for less than half of what the D800e and a Nikon 28/300 lens cost. I cut my teeth on a 4 X 5 Speed Graphic years ago and am well aware of the "grain" difference in a 35mm negative and a 4 X 5, having spent literally thousands of hours in a darkroom. SAme difference today in the megapixel "noise" difference, The higher the mp, the less "noise", as it is called today. SO if your thing is blowing up huge prints, then by all means the 800 series is the one to buy. IF you are like me and just blow up your prints to 8 X 10 size, then the D300s is the best, all things considered.Read full review
