Fine camera for the price. This was a very expensive camera when it came out, but the Mega-pixel hype most likely cooled the sales for this model. At 5.1MP it is a fantastic camera for all but the most blown up prints, 8X10 is no problem with a 5MP camera. What should be the selling point of this camera is the fantastic lens. There are 8+ MP cameras available that take horrible pctures. I know, I have used a few. A tiny fixed focal length pinhole lens can NOT give you the depth of field or light gathering power of a SLR like lens. Throw away 35mm cardboard cameras from the 99 cent store use the SAME type film (although serious photographers use premium 35mm film) as the SLR's. Do you think the picture quality is any different between the 2? You bet and it is ALL in the lens and to a smaller extent, the dynamic changes you can make with the shutter speed and F-stop. The Dimage 7 can be full auto (point and shoot) or Full manual or almost anywhere in between. This is a photographers camera. All the SLR settings are here and can be manipulated to produce some fantastic shots. Nice camera. The 7i and the 7Hi are very similiar with the 7Hi having a black body and both having a firmware update that is available for the 7 on the internet. All do have a serious flaw with the SONY sourced CCD. These were recalled and repaired for free for a while, but the program is over and now repairs on these cameras are over $200 from SONY. Be aware of this flaw when purchasing on Ebay or from another sller. Ask if the camera still gives you a live view through the LCD. If the camera shows a black image or a purple tinged picture, the CCD needs to be replaced and that is cost prohibitive as newer, as capable cameras are below $200 now. I can fix these so I dont mind if the CCD is in need of repair, but without the ability to repair, these are becoming common "as is" on the internet.Read full review
I bought this to replace a Dimage 7 Hi camera that I aquired from a fellow photographer/publisher. The 7 Hi was starting to act up, not holding pictures and generally going bad. When I saw the Dimage 7 listed I jumped on it simply because it is one of the easiest cameras to use and I get very HI END, reproduction photos from it. While neither of the cameras are TRUE SLR cameras, the range of add-on lenses, lights and remotes is quite good. I got a great camera, extra lens and... the most important part a manual of operation (which I did not have for the 7HI). Turns out I was pulling the memory card out too fast after taking pictures and when it came time to "empty" the card I would do it via my computer rather than formatting it in the camera. DUH... I now have 2 Minolta cameras and they both work (helps to read the manuals... its a guy thing) ALL thanks to the reasonably priced "replacement" camera with the manual the Dimage 7HI (which is a better camera) and the Dimage 7, with its 5.2 MP resolution. Lots of filters and optional add ons. For the money it is the best! I use these cameras to photograph fine art, paintings, sculptures and other items from close up shots of flowers to the patio at Santacafe in Santa Fe. You can see the results of pictures taken with this camera in their advertising and website. I guess I should say I own a small advertising agency and do my own photography for clients so eBay was like going to a head hunter to find me a cameraman to work for me....Read full review
Though the camera has been surpassed by new technology in several directions, it still remains a great camera for all kinds of photography. The manual zoom lets you have great control. The auto focus is fast and smart. The color balance is excellent. There is great user control without having to page through multiple screens of software. The controls are right there at your fingertips. Fantastic!!Once you know what they do, and how to use them, it is an easy camera to use. Though the camera is only 5.2 mp the Minolta lens captures razor clarity you would expect in something much higher. I have been very impressed. I have been resistant to the new cameras in the megapixel race that boast 12 mp's because of the added problem with enormous file sizes and storage space on hard drives. I don't want to choke my pc with too much... Also, I have been wanting to do a bit of infared photography. From the research I have done, this camera does a great job. For the photographer that does not have a big budget for a new digital slr, this camera will probably surprise you... For my use, the battery consumption problem on the Dimage 7 has been solved with the Sony 2700mAh rechargeable batteries. They give me plenty of battery life.Read full review

Probably one of the most underestimated cameras out there. Takes beautiful photos. Also takes very nice infrared photos. Good idea to take a good look at the manual before taking any pictures. This camera is loaded with functions that most begginers don't know about. The only negative remark I would put on this camera is that you must have some good rechargeable batteries, which can get expencive, in order to keep taking pictures. Regular batteries will only last a couple of min. But past that this camera is top of the line in the 5 megapixel class.
