I always buy a few sets of these for my studio, I play and record guitars and theres nothing worse than setting up gear or recording it based on a false sound projection. I know that the frequencies that I hear from these very accurate cans is very close to what my finally mix will sound like leaving me with a nice solid base recording to go from, you cant expect much more than that from any headphones no matter the price. I will admit these phones can get hot and uncomfortable after a couple hours anyone that says different is trying to sell you on a purchase, but so far I have yet to find as accurate a flat frequency flat response headphone and that includes phones that cost 3 times the price. If accuracy of sound is your main priority and you wont be living in these then you will do yourself a favor by trying these out for your next mix or recording session, as you'll be pleased that they dont color the bass heavy or polish the sound in away thats inaccurate to what your hearing. Bottom line: a great quality no frills headphone at rock bottom prices that are as accurate and true as phones costing 3 times the price...if you want to hear Pink Floyd in all their glory get a pair of $300 phones with excellent bass response and nice solid mids and clear trebles....if you want as accurate a production as you can get and you dont want to take chances...buy a few sets of these and be rest assured that you got more than your money's worth.Read full review
I own the Audio-Technical ATH-M50 headphones. They are perfect. My father fell in love them and with him not having a pair of his own, I thought what a great Father's Day gift for him. I wanted to get him a pair of mid grade Audio-Technical headphones since I know the brand and love their product. I came across these, the ATH-M40fs. I read the wonderful 5 star reviews it got. I also liked the price. I research things because I want my money to go towards a quality product that will last. Plus this gift if for my dad, so it has to be great. When the headphones arrived, my father saw them and hugged me right away with excitedness. He loves listening to classic song from the 50s and 60s. He tried the headphones on and said that it was comfortable and lightweight. Then he played music through it and was amazed at how the sound was so crisp and clear that it was like listening to these songs for the very first time. After 2 hours of use, my father said that the headphones were still comfortable, lightweight, blocks outside noise and is giving him wonderful sound to listen too. My father is happy. I am happy. Thank you Audio-Technica for making great headphones for a great price.Read full review
These headphones are great! It truly is a flat response headphone(s), it helps a lot when you are mastering. They also work great for tracking vocals, drums, guitar, etc... They do isolate the drums to an extent. It isolates the higs from the drums when you are tracking them (recording) That way you can actually hear the music, i don't mean cutting them off from the recording but isolating. You can master a song so good on these things. If you are looking for a great pair of headphones within a budget, you should buy these, you won't regret it!! Theay are simply amazing. Oh, and they are also very comfortable they don't cut off the circulation to your head ;) They are also great for playing games on the computer. These headphones are very clear and have a high SPL meaning the volume can go up super high without distortion; till your ears pop (don't try it) I've looked around for another pair of headphones for that price range and what you might come across are: Seinheisser HD-280 and the ATH-M40fs do not buy the Seinheisser ones they suck!! The ATH-M40fs are more solid, durable, have a wider frequency response, are more comfortable and doesn't have anything "boosted" or "enhanced," that way you get the clearest sound possible. I highly recommend these headphones!!Read full review
For the price, these headphones are unbeatable. Nice FLAT response. They have made the tasks of tracking and mixing in my humble home studio a pleasantry. I was once convinced that a good set of monitoring headphones was well beyond the $100 or less range. I was wrong. These phones way out-perform many in the studio of my recording/production class. Some of those sets are "worth" (retail) more than three times the price these. Other students have been asking to use mine for mixing. My only gripe, the rubberized faux leather coating will eventually crack and peel. However, I have noticed this is a common problem with headphones in general, even with those at a much higher price point.
For the money, this was the best pair of headphones I could find with a flat response for mixing of recordings. They do not exaggerate the high or low end so much like most others do, and they can take high volumes - though I don't recommend that for anyone who enjoys music and plans on hearing it far into the future. Since they are VERY tightly closed to your ears (not uncomfortably I must add), they keep outside noise out pretty well - but also because of this the low end seems slightly elevated above flat. Overall, I am happy with them for mixing and recording of tracks, etc. Normal listening would be ok as well, unless you like hyper-bass - which I don't. You would have to spend significantly more (like double) to get a better quality flat response from headphones from what I've seen and heard while shopping around for them. Scott N.
