We have upgraded from an antique LinkSys to this unit. We are not what you would call a connected family but there are two phones (paperweights actually) an i pad,PC printer and the Joey system from Dish all drawing on the wi fi signal in our home. The old router just could not keep up and was dropping out every couple of hours . This unit has not dropped out at all since we installed it and as far as I can tell it has not even approached it's limit for connected hardware. The third Joey is five walls and about 50 feet away and had the same signal reliability as every other connected piece of hardware. One more thing to avoid confusion I have noted that our smart phones though wi fi capable and in use , are only used when we travel ( the children demand it). We still live in the dark age of land line. I hope this performance review helps.Read full review

The unit I got was stuck in updating loop. It kept on asking for update, downloading, installing, restarting with older firmware. I reset it, Performed a manual update, used Asus' recovery tool and installed using router's built in recovery tool, but nothing worked. I downloaded Android app on phone and that did not work either due to obsolete firmware. I wasted two days on it. I would not recommend it because you do not want to be stuck with an old firmware and not being able to use latest features.

I have a very good gateway from my ISP that does an okay job throughout our house. it doesn't have great range and loses speed a distance very rapidly so I started to look for something with high throughput and greater ranges as an alternative. All the research I did all the reviews I read and all of the information I gathered pointed me to the RT ac68u. I have not used it long and I have not even gone into tweak any settings I'm just running it with the default easy setup and I am genuinely surprised by how good the performance is.I thought a lot of the reviews exaggerated or people were just trying to justify their purchase or make themselves feel better by embellishing how great the router is.. within 5 minutes of getting everything set up the difference was noticeable in our older three story home not counting the Attic at the furthest points from the old gateway on the main level two bars were the best you can expect ofttimes you would only get one. So far this router has not dropped below for bars anywhere and that was just briefly Mitchell v bar pops back up at the farthest corners of our home I can hit my isp's advertised speed wirelessly granted in my area the internet tops out at 120 meigs down but even so I'm able to achieve those speeds consistently and wirelessly. With the old gateway I could hit that type of speed but only when you were in near proximity to the gateway the ASUS router consistently test it at that speed no matter how far away I got in the house. In the next couple weeks I am to begin beta testing gigabit internet in our area from my ISP do my work for that is when the real test will happen even though they want me to use there gateway I have made arrangements to use this router as a another facet of the beta testing and I am excited to see how well it performs. It is still early but initial impressions have been overwhelmingly positive and far surpassed even my high expectations. If you would have told me that wireless internet was possible at these speeds and distances I would have thought you crazy but now I'm a believer. I will update this review if anything changes or I notice any drop off in performance especially after the new gigabit speeds are installed if I don't update it it is only because it is continuing to perform above and beyond my expectations. At this point I highly recommended it and after seeing how it performs I would not even consider another router especially at the price point you're not going to find anything better performing, you could spend a great deal more but how can you get better than near perfection as far as performance alone not even taking into consideration the value for the price Read full review

This is a great product with a excellent software package installed that gives the owner lots of options and controls when using the router. Best of all, the router allows usage of a mobile hotspot as the WAN via a USB cable versus WAN via the DSL cable from a modem! One other notable feature is the ability to use a VPN with this router and not have to install VPN software on every device this connects via Wi-Fi with this router. Extremely great product for the price and offers many features.

I bought this RT-AC68R to be am AIMesh node in my home network. After a firmware update, it work's great and has extended my internet range, and users do not need to switch WiFi SSID. As a stand alone router it also works really good. Get one at a good price, it's a real value.
