I bought the 310XT to replace my Forerunner 305 which popped off my wrist during the bike leg of a triathlon. With my next Forerunner I decided to purchase one that would allow me to use it in the water. Thus my decision to go with the XT. Long story short, the 310XT is fine but once I worked with it, I quickly learned that it DIDN't have some of my favorite features. The 305 could be programmed to alert you when you exceeded a pre-set speed on the bike or a certain pace on the run. I liked this feature because it let me know if I was "on pace" without me having to check my watch. Plus I thought it was damn cool to hear the bell ring when I eclipsed the 22mph mark. The XT did not have this same feature. Also, the XT doesn't do a very good job of storing data. The unit is designed to have the data dowloaded; not stored. The 305 stored several months of data on the unit. The XT can store data but after about a week it won't tell you on which days you did which workouts. It all gets lumped together. In sum the XT works fine but I do miss my 305. If I had to do it over I would still go with the XT but ONLY because the XT is water resistant and was designed to be used in the pool and open water which has helped me in being quicker in my transitions. For those of you who stay on dry land, I would definately go with the 305 rather than the 310XT. At the end of the day I think it comes down to personal preference.Read full review
This product meets all my requirements for long distance equine competition. I like that there are multiple screens to provide me with a variety of details. Long battery life essential and the ability to track my training with the USB ANT stick is great!

I am MTB and Road cyclist, weekend racer and one-day-tourist. Also I do running and skiing as training for bike races. I was always interested in improving my race results. In particular, I was looking for a small multi-purpose device that will help me to collect and analyze results of my training, will display this data during training, will help orienting in long one-day tour rides, will not use the battery of my cell-phone. I was always liked Garmin products, so the choice was between Edge 500 and Forerunner 310XT. First was mostly bike-oriented device, second - more universal, but with lack of several features, like temperature sensor and barometric altimeter. I decided, that I will be interested not only in bike trainings, so, I bought 310. My version was without any accessories, so, I borrow ANT stick from my friend and begin to use it with basic features. Pros: * Long operating time, you can do several trainings without recharging. * Display can be used even in direct sunlight. * Device can display and collect a lot of data, even without external sensors. * Blazing fast data transfer to pc, you don't need any cables. * Simple navigation options like following pre-loaded track and trackback * User-friendly interface Cons: * Requires accessories to collect additional necessary data like cadence, power, and handlebar/stem mount for convenient data viewing during bike races. * Lack of temperature sensor and barometric altimeter.Read full review
Been using my Garmin 305 for nearly 5 years. It was a great GPS watch. But I recently upgraded to the 310XT and it is a great improvement over the 305. The 310XT acquires it's GPS signal SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the 305. This was a huge problem in the past when I was running a trail race in a wooded area where my 305 could not gain a GPS signal. Sometimes there would be a 10-15 minute wait. The 310XT, I have never had to wait more than 30 seconds under any conditions. Users who are used to the 305 or 205 will find the controls on the 310XT very easy to use because they are pretty much exactly the same. This watch is also lighter and smaller than the 305 and 205, yet has double the battery life. I have had about 16 hours of continuous use on the 310XT compared to about 9 hours on the 305. Lastly, the 310XT is waterproof which is great for inclement weather and swimmers. I am not a swimmer so I have not fully tested the waterproofing of the watch, but this is the ONLY Garmin GPS watch that is waterproof so that adds a psychological benefit of being more durable. The ANT wireless technology has a few hiccups but does work much better than the old cradle system of the 305. There is setup process and driver download that you will have to go through to install the wireless ANT dongle to each of the computers you will be using your 310XT on. On the Garmin Connect Website, the 310XT breaks down your mileage splits with more data when you upload your usage through the wireless ANT. A marked improvement over the 305. Lastly, this is the only Garmin GPS watch that works with the Tanita scale system (InerScan BC-1000). I purchased the scale and through the ANT technology, it will show you your BMI, muscle mass, water weight, etc... You can go to the Tanita website for detailed information. Anyhow, overall, I give this watch a 5/5 rating as a runner and cyclist. If you are in need of an upgrade for a new GPS watch, make sure you give this a good look.Read full review
