I bought the forerunner 301 in Feb 2011 and have been using it for 11 months now. It is a great product that has helped me train starting from 0k to 10k. I don't think that I could have done it without the 301! I have had no problems at all with it. It usually takes a few minutes to link up to a satellite, but I usually turn it on when I start my stretching and it is ready by the time I start my run. It is very easy to use and provides all the information that I need to track my progress on the computer. When I get done with my run, I just plug the device into the usb port on my laptop and it automatically downloads into my computer. I have all my runs in the computer and can see my progress from day one to the present. I am considering buying one of the newer models, but I plan to stick with Garmin. Many people may not like the size of this device, but it works for me, probably because I am older and my vision is not that good, so the larger display is easier to read. The heart rate strap is ok, but I understand that the newer ones are more comfortable. I am also thinking about buying extra 301's for friends that will never buy one on their own. Once you run with one of these, you will never want to run without it again!!!Read full review
This is my second 301. My first one's Heart Rate function stopped working a little after the warranty ran out (wasn't just the transmitter on the chest-I'm marking overall as good, but it would be excellent without this issue). But note that I bought another one. This is a great device for the money. It provides much information about my workouts using it with the Training Center program that you can easily upload from the device to your PC. I'm a big fan of using Heart Rate as a measurement of my workouts that consist of running and cycling. Other pluses. This device allows you to set individual maximum heart rates based on 3 individual sports (cycling, running, one "other") and allows you various ways to see % level of heart rate. Speed, distance and time is also on the main face. There are two other displays available including one that allows you to personalize what you want to see. You don't have to use all the functions, but I find that most are not difficult to learn. Instructions are pretty clear. The drawbacks are few. Its kind of bulky for a monitor, bigger and odd shaped compared to most watch/monitors. It didn't bother me. But you will not want to use it as another watch. Great way to monitor your effort and give evidence of increased fitness. Definitely worth it if you work out on a regular basis.Read full review
This is a great product for training. I just used it for the first time in a 5K race. The Forerunner works flawlessly and kept accurate information of time and distance. The only issue I have is with the heart rate monitor. It is very uncomfortable around the chest and was slipping during my run. I have to figure out how to best wear this. The heart rate monitor kept losing communication with the GPS. There is still a lot to be tested out on this product. I highly recommend it to anyone starting out in their training. There are multiple modes, Running, Biking, Other. You can also customize your workouts and downlaod it to your GPS from the included software.
I bought this as a gift for my son who is in the Army and can use this as a navication device in the field. He was extreamly pleased! It has most of the features he needs when navigating in the field. As a college ROTC instructor it has been helpful in teaching navigation to the cadets. He likes th download features to review what took place in the field so it can enhance his instruction. A great product!
I have nothing to say but good things about this product. previously I had the Forerunner 201 and I lost it, but I was so used to it that it wans't the same to jog with out it, so I decided to buy another, but I saw the 301 includes heart rate monitor, so I bought it. If you like to jog, cycling, hiking, etc it's a must have. If you want to follow a training program and you want to see your progress what's best than having a device that gives you exact data about distance, height, time, calories, etc, it provides you with lots of data and helps you to keep a log. And you have all that on a device a little bigger than a watch.
