I purchased this camera as a replacement for an older model SD9 without the expense of going to the new SD1 (which was outside my budget) and selected it over the newer SD15 model because it still takes CF memory cards, I didn't see advantages in the later model. The camera matched all my existing Sigma SA lenses (even film camera lenses) and accessories. This camera is quite big compared to some of it's competitors which makes it more comfortable to use, theres a fair bit of weight there as well. The camera has much better auto exposure control than its predecessor and the extra resolution does not go astray. The camera lacks most of the fancy controls of other newer more expensive SLRs which I find gives me full creative control over the pictures taken. This is a real photographers camera, it's not the camera for just taking snapshots, but for someone who understands photography like it used to be with film or wants to learn the art it's a great tool. The foveon sensor is different to other cameras, a bit like comparing apples and oranges, the raw images appear to be only 4.7 Mpixels, compared to 12 Mpixels from similar SLRs, But because these are real pixels and not interpolated. The image compares favourably with higher resolution cameras and still provides excellent quality prints at A3 size, which is as big as most people would ever need. You can only use Sigma SA lenses if you need autofocus, but there range is large. Best features are the rich color from the foveon sensor and built in infrared capability. I find the design has good ergonomics and the camera is comfortable to use. It hasn't got a Nikon or Cannon badge on it but I can live with that. I wouldn't recommend it to a friend unless they knew what they were getting in to. I would recomend it to someone who could use as a tool for creativity.Read full review
I use this camera for nature photography. I find the camera and its unique color scheme well suited to that purpose. Most of the time I just use the automatic settings. However, adjusting various priorities and/or manually focusing when I'm trying for a difficult shot is also pretty easy and either way I get good results that don't require post processing. It is perfect for me as I have little interest in using complicated software to fix mediocre photos.

In my estimation it is the best digital SLR for many reasons. Each camera is designed for a purpose and in its class I recommend the FoveonX3 cameras. I now have two SD14s.---Eric Westhagen
