This being a slightly older machine, and the low-end of the G5 line at that, I wasn't expecting much. I bought it based on the price, just to have a machine to tinker around with, and I had always wanted one but couldn't afford it. I had previously been using a 1Ghz G4 tower to play around with, and that was starting to show its age as far as speed was concerned. On turning the G5 on, though, I was very pleasantly surprised. The machine runs circles around my G4, though only being marginally "faster". It handles flash video like YouTube and so forth beautifully, I would almost say with less sweat than my i5-driven MacBook Pro does. It also uses standard PCI slots (unlike the faster G5s that used PCI-x), so I was able to migrate over the PCI cards that were loaded in my G4 (USB 2.0, FireWire and, most importantly, external SATA). The cons to this machine are few, though the aforementioned PCI slots can be one of the downsides as they don't make too many straight-up PCI cards anymore (opting rather for PCI-x or PCI Express). Also, there are only two hard drive bays (as opposed to the G4's 4) and a single optical drive bay, so forget about direct-copying DVDs or using Zip disks or whatever. This being the low-end of the G5 line, it can also only access 4GB of RAM, whereas the faster machines could take up to 8GB. The final downside is that, being a PowerPC-based Mac, it is no longer supported by Apple and you are limited to using OS 10.5.8. All in all, it is a fine machine that does very nicely for what it is, and continues to hold up well even today in the world of multi-core processors and solid-state drives and easily outpaces most netbooks and Atom-based machines.Read full review
My experience using the PowerMac G5 2.0GHz DP (June 2003) model far better than what I initially expected. As a Pro Tools 8 & Final Cut user, this machine is still running circles around my old G4 MDD. I can see a huge difference in performance with my eyes closed. The G5 has stronger 64bit dual processors, higher ram capacity (up to 8GB), faster system bus speeds, higher cache bus speeds, usb 2.0, firewire 400, firewire 800, digital I/O ports & 9 (nine) whisper quiet cooling fans. My only complaints: 1. My PCI expansion cards won't fit this unit (G5 is PCI-X series). 2. It isn't compatible with the newer versions of Pro Tools. 3. It's maximum Operating System is OSX 10.5.8. 4. It will only recognize ram sticks ONLY when they are installed in pairs (ie. 2x256mb, 2x512mb, 2x1GB, 2x2GB, etc.) I'm not concerned with adobe flash support as I browse the web from my laptop & or android device. This machine is STRICTLY a dedicated production machine & I am very happy to use it in my recording studio. It's blazing fast, looks more modern & it makes my rig ultra stable & error free. To sum it up, if you are on a budget & you are shopping for a powerful production unit; IF your specs are compatible with PowerPC G5, this machine is the way to go. Simply max out the ram & watch how surprised you'll be. Right now, mine is running 4.5GB of ram & hasn't blinked or hiccuped YET. AWESOME..Read full review
This is my 2nd PowerMac G5 purchase (adding another Mac to the house). I had been a Windows user for many years and switched when my graphic design business took off and the Windows machines were struggling to keep up with the design software (Illustrator). I've been using nothing but Macs for 5 years now and I'll never go back to a Windows machine. The PowerMac is sturdy, stable, and fast. It handles RAM and processor-intensive tasks flawlessly. Every thing about this machine screams professional and durable. The only quirk I've noticed with my G5 is that sometimes when it goes into sleep mode and I click the mouse to wake it up, it wakes up for about 1 second and goes right back to "sleep", requiring a 2nd click. I don't really even consider that a nuisance, though. To tell you how much I love my Macs, in 5 years, I've owned 3 Mac laptops, one Mac mini, 2 G4 desktops, and 2 G5 desktops. The only one I don't still have is the mini -- I traded it in on one of the G5's.Read full review
the g5 apple power mac desktops are a very beautiful computers, with the new age look.this is a upgrade from my g4 power mac desktop.runs os 10 a great operating system. the downside for me is no extra external drive bays on the case so you have to use usb external drives and take up space on the office desk. the apple power mac computers are to me far better looking and running better than the windows based computers. but i use mac, windows and linux software evenly!
The seller was very honest and told me what the computer could and couldn't do, he also did a fresh install for me, the Mac works great as most of them do. I would recommend a Mac to anybody thats tiered of PC problems and viruses, Owning a Mac and the way they just work with little to no problems at all out weights any differences you may have to get used to.
