The drive is very solid. Metal case is durable, not cheap tinfoil or plastic. You will need to visit the WD website for software. I recommend the utilities, security, and Acronis for WD drives downloads. Backing up to this drive went relatively fast and without issue. The refurbished drive comes with a 2 year warranty.

I had near heart attacks twice now. First, I had loaded a lot of data on this and the next day nothing showed up! Fortunately I still had the data on an older drive I was replacing, but why didn't it show up? I reloaded the info. Now if I eject the WD, I have a tough time getting it to show up on my Macbook Pro again. I have to restart the computer, freak out that it still didn't come back up and wonder what is going on. I run diagnostics and can see that it is attached through the apple system, but it takes an hour or two before I can see it appear. I am still not certain how it is magically appearing when it does and what to do when it doesn't show up. Until I figure this out, I won't be adding anymore data to it. And yes, I formatted it for Mac.

This is one of the best external drives you can buy. I have a few of these and never had any major problems with them (other than the cables). Other cheap ones have gone out on me and even crashed... I don't take chances anymore. My saves are very valuable to me. I am a song writer, poet, and music composer so I need to have a good place to save my files. I also use clouds of course but with this portable external drive I can take my music on the go. Very useful and dependable.
