UHER 4000 Report Monitor, Working Perfectly, Plus Accessories:
$700.00

Uher 4000 Report Monitor AV. Excellent working condition, this has been my personal recorder for many many years. It sounds great, all functions work, and it meets or exceeds the manufacturer specifications.

I checked the recorder every 80 hours to ensure it works properly. Whenever anything didn’t meet spec, I fixed it or made the appropriate adjustments. It has new belts and has had only about 30 hours of use since. Also has a new main drive flywheel, reconditioned pinch roller. Recently lubricated and tape drive adjusted. I biased it for Scotch 206 tape, which means that most tapes will sound fine.

Battery compartment is great.

This item also includes a very nice carry case with strap, the AC adapter, and a Uher M517 microphone (not pictured). I did have the Uher condenser microphone designed for the 4000 Report Monitor but it broke (it didn’t sound much better than the M517 and showed pretty sketchy build quality, so no big deal). Oh yeah, and the groovy Uher-branded empty reel is included too…gotta have that psychedelic “yin-yang” style graphic hub spinning, you know!

A few notes to get the best results from this recorder:

It has a better signal-to-noise ratio when you use batteries (5 D cells) instead of the AC adapter brick. The reason why I don’t have the AC adapter cable or charger cable is because those cables have a tendency to break the DIN accessory jack (marked with a triangle). If you want to use rechargeable batteries use standard NiMh D cells, charge them in a charger and put them in the Uher. Don’t use an aftermarket battery pack that is sold as a supposed replacement for Uher. They don’t work reliably and I have seen some of them ruin the Uher internal power supply. MAKE SURE ANY RECHARGEABLE D CELL YOU BUY IS BETWEEN 1.2 VDC AND 1.5 VDC!!! I’ve seen 3 VDC rechargeable batteries and those will wreck the Uher’s electronics!

If for some reason the included AC adapter brick doesn’t work, let me know and I will send you a replacement for free. They can go bad suddenly after working perfectly, usually a bad capacitor or diode.

The M517 has a push button switch that is supposed to put a UHER tape recorder into pause, but it doesn’t work with the Monitor AV series (it’s not meant to).

Definitely use only 1.5-mil or 1.0-mil tape, because 0.5-mil tape tends to not be gripped by the pinch roller properly — sometimes, the recorder can chew it up. You get the best performance from 1.5-mil tape!

Don’t use EE “Extra Energy” tapes because they are actually Chrome tapes, which almost no recorder can use, including this one.

Don’t use vintage acetate tapes! They’ll break!

USE A NICKEL COIN to turn the latch to remove the bottom to access the battery/ac adapter compartment. If you use anything other than a nickel you will break the (plastic) latch button. I know this from firsthand experience, I broke one. And had to replace it.

I haven’t used the headphone jack in years, I assume it still works.

Because of the age of the equipment, I am forced to sell it as is, no warranty. I hate doing that, but it’s because of the lack of protection for sellers because of ‘s policies. If there is some problem with the recorder, contact me, and I’ll try to help you through it. I don’t expect any problem, but this is a CYA situation.
